Randomly stumbled upon this spot! We were driving from NJ to Montréal, Canada and hit the Albany area for a late breakfast/early lunch. The place is so cute! A bunch of small rooms, dark wood trim, fireplaces, old portraits. Food service was efficient and food was tasty. I had the chicken club sandwich-chicken was soft and moist. Fries were also great. Others in my group had the stuffed French toast (good, but wouldn’t call it stuffed. It was a breakfast sandwich with French toast bread), grilled cheese and potato soup (asked for white bread but received marbles rye, also the cheese was a thin strip, or gooey like you would expect), and a burger. Also had the maple latte-excellent! Very sugary but it was a treat so it’s fine. Also, we went around 10:30am on a Thursday. No wait to be seated.

This ia very popular brunch place. We called 2 hours before we arrived for reservation and still wait for 30 minutes to be sit in. The waiters are all very friendly and helpful. The services were also prompt… Food portion was also generous and delicious…. If you are willing to wait, this is definitely a good choice for breakfast, lunch, and brunch….

Good for brunch & breakfast. Plenty of outdoor dining area. Decent menu. Dog-freindly place (outdoor). Be prepared to line up on the weekends. Best option is to add your name to the waiting list online (Yelp)

Delicious food; lots of variety on their menu whether you’re looking for breakfast or lunch, and with high-quality ingredients you can’t really go wrong no matter what you pick. The bacon on the sandwiches was crispy. Real maple syrup was served with the french toast. Service was good and organized even though it was busy, but I wouldn’t eat here if I was short on time. Would visit again.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that road-trips require restroom breaks, the occasional gas tank fill-up, and pit stops for lunch. Perhaps not universally acknowledged, but none the less true, is that there are better alternatives than the usual suspects of fast food that litter our highways.

On a road-trip from West Connecticut to Lake Champlain, I decided to stop into Albany to quest for some ‘real food’ – and on the recommendation of my brother-in-law, I took my family to the Iron Gate Cafe. He claimed that it was the number one lunch spot in the city, and on that promise I tolerated the 45 minute wait for a table that would inevitably eat away at the arrival time of my final destination.

Bobbing and weaving through the outdoor seating area at the front of the building, and through several inside dining rooms, we were seated in an outside dining space that seemed to have once been a rear garden. I ordered a BLT, a simplified version of what was offered on the menu, and an iced coffee. Other members of my family ordered similar items, variations of BLTs and sandwiches, indulging in sourdough breads and multi-grains, except for my father-in-law who had ordered a slice of cornbread with eggs.

Upon arrival, I had the rare and pleasantly embarrassing sensation of a mouth watering. Everything had arrived perfectly for all of us, except for a small mix-up of bread types on one sandwich. The flavors were perfectly simple, balanced, and complementary. The finish was light on the stomach, energizing rather than making me feel sluggish and sleepy. The homefries were a highlight of the dish for me, having the perfect saltiness, a crispy texture of the outside, and the much-coveted softness of the inside.

The servers were fast, despite being clearly faced with the logistical challenge of navigating the layout of what appeared to be an old home with an almost Victorian layout.

One of the only downsides to the restaurant is that there are fewer, and smaller, restrooms than seem to be appropriate for the number of guests and the apparent popularity of the Iron Gate Cafe. Naturally, this is a limitation of the layout of the structure and equally part of the charming character of the place. It seems that the rotation of customers seems to help prevent lines (that would encroach upon other’s dining areas), but when several people in my party tried to use the restroom as we were leaving, it became easily congested.

Overall, the Iron Gate Cafe made for a perfect sojourn into the state capital for me and well-deserves it’s number one spot for places to eat in Albany.

We’ve been here twice now and both times have been totally delicious and worth the drive. The sweets are sweet but extremely flavorful (not JUST sweet, you know?) and the savory stuff is also incredibly delicious and well done. I even liked the home fries and I’m not one for potatoes. The dill and onion bread is absolutely delicious, I want to buy loaves of it. What a gem!

This is our 2nd visit, ordered ham, cheese omelet, eggs was light and fluffy, delicious, home fries a bit dry, would be great if onions, peppers were added to give more flavor as a base to the potatoes. Also ordered buttermilk pancakes ,a bit disappointing ,dough tasted a bit raw and processed taste, simple recipe of fresh flour, eggs etc would go a long way if Madison changed their product to home made. Also would like to see sausage breakfast links instead of patty. Cinnamon swirl bread was delicious. Madison is a quaint breakfast /lunch establishment, staff is very professional and friendly.

I was super disappointed. This was the first time I had a bad experience here. We checked their weekend specials. I was excited to try the poutine Benedict special and my son ordered the pumpkin pancakes. The service was slow even though we arrived before 9am. After about a 45 minute wait the food came to the table. I took one bite and knew it had been sitting in the window quite a while. The gravy was ice cold as were the eggs. Cold yoke is just gross. No one ever came over to check on our food or refill our coffees till my son had completely finished his meal. They offered to make me a new order but I didn’t have another hour available to wait. I wasn’t charged for the entree, literally took only 1 bite so I would have been upset if I had been. They comped our coffee but I think they should have included the pancakes too. It wasn’t very busy and it appeared that socializing amongst the staff was the priority. I’m not giving up on the place because I have had many delicious meals there but today I was so disappointed. Left hungry and went to Dunkin Donuts next door for a breakfast sandwich. It was not their best effort today.

Mornings Made Better by Cafe Madison

This was our first visit to Cafe Madison and we’re planning to go back…many more times. There was immediate seating at the bar so we bellied on up and started our meal with hot and frothy cappuccinos brewed up right before our eyes.

The restaurant was filled with energy as the staff buzzed around ensuring patrons were well tended to. Our servers at the bar helped us with making suggestions and engaged in conversation when time permitted.

We ordered Huevos Rancheros from the specials menu and the Hash Breakfast. The staff said the Rancheros used to be a staple on the menu but they only bring it back for specials these days; they highly recommended it saying they usually sell out of quickly. The chorizo was a tad spicy but still delicious.

The hash dish was just as good as the Rancheros. As if corned beef hash is decadent on its own, they add a cheese sauce that puts it over the top. The only missed was I paired it with onion/dill bread; you should definitely get rye bread with corned beef.

The eggs were cooked perfectly on each dish and the side potatoes were well seasoned.

The restaurant is clean and offers a comfortable and fun atmosphere. There seems to be plenty of street parking and they offer outdoor seating when the weather permits.

If you haven’t been yet, go! Be sure to sign up for their rewards program for takeout and delivery orders.

    UPDATE: 4/10/22
We got the chicken and waffle…crispy chicken tenders served on top of a roasted corn and jalapeno waffle. If you like flavors of the Southwest, you’ll love this waffle. The taste of jalapeno comes through with the slightest hint of heat. Topped with maple butter and a sweet hot-honey syrup. Definitely worth trying!

We got sides of over-medium eggs which were perfectly cooked and crispy bacon.

Sadly, the menu still offers their winter selection of adult coffee beverages but they aren’t making most. If the salted caramel coffee is still being served, give it a try. It’s like dessert and coffee wrapped up in one.

This is the best coffee shop in the area with consistently amazing bagel sandwiches. Today’s bagel was so well made, we had to take a photo. It’s heaven in every bite! 😋

decent bagel, the coffee is the same as Starbucks, if you love that, you’ll love this. If you don’t, you won’t. Quite a nice interior with lots of seating. Service at the register was just ok. She got it done but without any real feeling of welcome.

Would be great if they opened at 6 like it says. It is 6:15 with a line of people waiting outside and the lights aren’t even on. Wish I could say this was a rare occurrence but it happens every time I come. Some day another bagel place will open and maybe this place will value the time of their customers. Gotta be to work at 6:30 still not open at 6:20.

Best bagels. Best cream cheese. Best bagel sandwiches. Best espresso. Best almond milk latte. Best everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese combo ever. Seriously, come here anytime of the day and you will be treated to some of the best bagels and coffee you have ever had. Dare I say this is a religious experience. I might dare. Be prepared for a bit of a wait if you come in the mornings and on the weekends…but like I said…worth it. 1000%

First time here. Latte is absolutely amazing but didnt like the masala chai. It tastes just like the vanilla chai latte of dunkins not great. Bagels seemed fresh even though it was the closing time. Must talk about the ambience inside. Really amazing.

It’s ok… I came here because I wanted to try something different and they had a decent menu.

It is a small cafe. Like you can see the entire place from the front door small. So I highly doubt they could accommodate a large group last minute.

The food was very very diner-ish. I ordered a sandwich and my kid had a burger. We both enjoyed them. I also had a Bellini it was terrible. I’m not sure if it was the peach purée or the champagne but I wouldn’t ever order that again. EVER.

I ordered onion rings to go they were over cooked but my kid ate em anyway so it’s cool.

I would recommend this place for a quick bite with the kids or friends.

Not a date or anything romantic.

Not a happy customer!!! Don’t eat at Peaches!! Eaten here many times and the one time I ordered for online pickup they didn’t get make it. Basically forgot to make it. What’s even worse is that I waited what seemed like forever for somebody to even acknowledge me. A woman after me waited a long time too and she just walked without anyone helping her. She just wanted to do a to go order. I spent $15 for basic breakfast. Won’t be going back, Ever again. I would at least expect a response from management and ownership. The young woman was clearly overwhelmed. First time I ever did an online pickup there broil was in a hurry, then waited another 15 minutes. So order took almost an hour, Unacceptable and way overpriced. I was very hungry and in a big hurry. Absolutely disgusting. Orange had ice cubes, tasted like Orange soda, look at pictures and you’ll burnt potatoes, omelette had barely any spinach and egg. Small quantity and bad quality.

We stopped by for breakfast here while we were visiting Albany. I got the strawberry waffle with sausage links. We also got the sunny side eggs and ham. All was cooked well and it was a nice meal!

I always love coming to Peaches, and even when there is a wait, it’s well worth it. The staff is attentive and very friendly and the food is always delicious! I got the special “Smothered Eggs Benedict” and it was wonderful, their hollandaise sauce is incredible and the eggs were poached perfectly. To top it all off I got a French toast Latte with this adorable Cinnamon pumpkin on top and an apple cider mimosa to round out the fall feel.

    Can’t wait to go back!

Cider belly makes delicious donuts hands down. They also make vegan and gluten free varieties. If you’re a bargain hunter like me, look for their “belly flops,” deep discounts on donuts that are a little small, a little too crunchy, or other such minor flaws that don’t quite make the cut but still taste delicious. Yum!

Variety of vegan and gluten free options as well.

Great local doughnut shop with a huge variety of flavors. The glazes/icings are out of this world, and the maple, lemon, pear, blueberry varieties are ones I’m still thinking of a week later. Fresh, tasty and very well priced. Highly recommended!

We chose to have a donut tower from Cider Belly at our wedding last weekend instead of a traditional wedding cake and we are so glad we did. Not only did we get top notch service and a variety of flavors, but that tower looked super fancy. They went quickly and we cannot wait to order more donuts from them in the future!
